Meet Brady. Brady is a 5th-grade homeschooled student with Dyslexia. When Brady started Orton Gillingham, he was at least 2 grade levels behind and frustrated with reading. Now, Brady is reading close to grade level, level thanks to our weekly Orton-Gillingham sessions. He's a hard worker and enjoys "competing" with himself to increase his reading fluency and speed!
"Working with Erin has given Brady the skills and confidence to read, something he never had before. He now considers it his favorite subject!" - Mom
Meet Lexi. Lexi is a senior in high school and is excited to attend college next year! She has ADHD and her executive function skills are impacted. However, Lexi is determined and has worked hard to increase her academic skill and organization. Lexi worked with Erin to research and apply for 6 colleges in her home state. In addition, she worked on outlining, writing, editing, and peer revising her college application essays.
Throughout the year, Lexi worked on setting goals and planning their completion so that her level of independence increases as she heads to college next fall. Together, we planned goal completion for getting her driver's license, learning to cook, learning to do her laundry, and planning out her coursework.
"I never thought Lexi would apply to more than one college. Your work with her expanded her understanding of what is possible and she's excited for the future, now more than ever!"

Meet Samuel. Samuel and his family often travel internationally and participate in various homeschool programs where they live. Because of international travel, virtual availability is important. While Samuel is incredibly "engineering-minded," he struggles with reading comprehension and sequenced writing. In addition, through his work with our Occupational Therapist (handwriting), it was recommended that Samuel get evaluated for vision therapy so that his eyes worked in better coordination together. Samuel is thriving and growing as he's now able to sequence and write an organized summary as well as showcase improved handwriting. For a student who is brilliant in some areas, having deficits in others can be frustrating. Working with our team has increased his confidence and grown his skills!
"Samuel's school presents projects on what they are learning each term. This is often a huge frustration for Samuel because he has to write everything out and have it on display and struggles with having his hand writing be legible (which to others looks like he didn't work hard on it as looks sloppy). This month, he's doing so, so much better with his handwriting, even his teacher commented on his improvements. It's noticeable how much easier it is to read his writing and how much more he's able to stay on the lines/not write off the page/etc. He still has room to go on spelling but it's all progressing well!"

Meet Derek. Derek has worked with Erin for over 4 years and is currently working specifically on managing his executive function skills. As a high schooler, Derek benefits from less direct instruction and more accountability and check-ins. Our team has collaborated with his family to create a text-based accountability program with his EF coach, himself, and his parents Coupled with a monthly 1:1 virtual session, Derek continues to have a great school year demonstrating organization, planning ahead, participating in school activities, and even holding a part-time job!
"Teamwork!! So proud of him!!"

Meet Candace. Candace is a middle schooler with suspected dyslexia. She is reading slightly below grade level and lacks cofnidnece in her 6th grade classes. This is particularly impactful in her ELA class when working on literature or reading for understanding.
Candance has been working with Erin through the Orton-Gillingham based reading intervention program and while she's still working to grade level reading, her confidence is increasing as her fluency and speed increase. In fact, she's even teaching her mom!
"I didn't even understand open and closed syllables but when I asked Candace, she explained it to me! She is learning and gaining much more confidence. Thank you!"
-Mom
Meet Shay. Shay is a middle school student with Dyslexia and ADHD. She is also highly creative. Shay attends a project-based school and, while her project ideas are wonderful, she has trouble planning and executing them independently. Her Executive Function skills can impact her ability to start a task (task initiation), organize her thoughts, and gather all of the necessary material in a timely manner. In addition, she struggles to organize her writing and feel confident in her skills.
Shay has been working with Erin throughout the school year to organize and prioritize her school work, as well as complete certain projects. In addition, they've also worked on improving her organization of thought within her writing.
While Shay's experiences have taught her "I'm just lazy or stupid," Erin's work with her replaces that language with "the neurons in your brain haven't connected yet" and "you aren't lazy, your brain is overwhelmed, let's begin this together." Shay's level of organization has improved as she now keeps a weekly planner of homework and color codes the assignments. She benefits from continued support but has demonstrated strengths and growth in many areas.
"Thank you SO MUCH for your encouragement and support for her! She really needs that and I think your words mean a lot to her...I am so grateful you are there for her when she needs it the most. Thank you so much!"

Meet Milo. Milo is a high schooler with ASD and is fascinated by dinosaurs. When it comes to reading fiction or sequencing stories, he struggles with abstract concepts.
Milo and Erin work together on choosing a fictional, sequenced book, reading it, and taking notes. We extend his working memory by taking specific notes on each section he reads so that he retains the key details as he reads. Once complete, Milo will write a summary of the story, identifying key details and elements of comprehension.
In addition, Milo has begun writing his own fiction stories following the writing process. Of course, he includes dinosaurs as his main characters but he is very thoughtful to ensure the accuracy of how they are depicted. Milo has developed a love for writing "who will win" stories and even decided to write one in his free time!
"Milo benefits from support with abstract concepts and fiction-based comprehension. Working with Erin has inspired Milo to write his own stories, including facts and high-interest in his own fictional writing."
